The globally famous expert of diagnostics, president of New York Clinical Competence Training Center, lecture professor of Department of internal medicine and diagnostics of Xiangya Hospital, Mark H. Swartz, M.D., held a series of international medical teaching communication activities at Xiangya Hospital Central South University from May 1st to 18th, 2019. This was his third time coming to Xiangya Hospital and he truly brought a feast of medical education to the undergraduates, residents and staffs in the hospital. Two of the academic events were also presented online and received nearly ten thousand audience viewing the activities.

The academic communication held this time mainly focused on medical humanism, internal medicine bedside rounds and demonstrations of physical examination which was greatly expected by most students, and so on. Coincidently, the 2019 Xiangya international medical education seminar was also being convened and Professor Swartz was invited to give a workshop named “Humanism in Medical Practice in an Age of Technology”, which was thought highly of by the students and experts attending the seminar. In his speech, Professor Swartz shared his experience in medicine practice for more than 40 years to the youngsters at the seminar and taught everyone that one of the basic qualities clinical workers should have is humanistic care and the secret of taking after patients lies in caring for them.

According to the original plan, Professor Swartz participated in the bedside rounds of Department of Nephrology and Rheumatology and Immunology as schedule. The cases that were used and discussed in each department were diabetic nephropathy and gout. Though he was a cardiologist, professor Swartz deeply impressed all the staffs with his strong skills at diagnostics. Despite his inconvenience in language, all the caring for patients and appreciation for doctors in Xiangya Hospital had been expressed by all kinds of body language during the teaching rounds.

What pushed the teaching communication activity to climax was the physical examination demonstration, with more than three hundred medical undergraduates and residents taking part in to learn. On the demonstration, professor Swartz showed the most important neurological examination for the audience. To teachers of internal medicine, it was the brand-new presentation that made the teachers have further awareness of how to teach this part of knowledge to students. One of the students from Anesthesia specialty of grade 2016, Jianxi Zhang commended, “Both the active interaction between the professor and students and the communication with the standardized patient conveyed a sense of comfort to us. It felt like that patients were more friends than just patients and students were more like colleagues than just students for the great professor. This kind of humanism could help both the doctors and patients reach a consensus in a mild way: only when doctors and patients stand on the same side can they both overcome diseases!” Meanwhile, another student coming from clinical medicine of grade 2016, Jingying Chen, who served as the standardized patient, learned that even a physical examination could be so meticulous and warm by personally experiencing professor’s splendid presentation. All the participants were sincerely grateful to this great opportunity provided by the Department of Internal Medicine.

Professor Jing Wu, chief of Department of Internal Medicine and Diagnostics in Xiangya Hospital Central South University, said that hopefully, by initially hiring top international teaching savants in internal medicine and diagnostics and inviting them to guide the work and teaching in the hospital step by step, the level of internal medicine and diagnostics education could be elevated to a new height, aiming to building a Xiangya-style world-class medical education team. It has been learned that professor Swartz will return to Xiangya Hospital in the beginning of September this year and conduct a series of education communications, and we welcome all the fellows in medical education to keep following.
